High-Fiber Dog Food: 7 Things to Check

Fiber is more than one number

More fiber isn't automatically better

The right amount and type of fiber depends on your dog's goal, whether that's firmer stools, weight management or steadier digestion.

Look at

  • The crude fiber content in context
  • Where the fiber comes from (e.g. pumpkin, beet pulp, psyllium)
  • Quality protein and a suitable fat level
  • Calories for your dog's size and activity
  • Added prebiotics that support gut bacteria
  • What goal you're actually trying to support

Match it to the goal

A moderate, quality fiber source suits most dogs better than simply chasing the highest number. If your dog has ongoing stool problems, check with your vet before making a big change.
